China, Indonesia vow to promote military cooperation

BEIJING, April 22 -- General Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met with visiting Indonesia's Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Beijing on April 22. Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun also held talks with Sjafrie on the same day.

General Zhang Youxia said that under the strategic guidance of the heads of state of the two countries, the building of China-Indonesia community with a shared future has been steadily advancing, setting an example of South-South cooperation and mutual benefit. Both sides understand and support each other's core interests and major concerns, and join hands to address various risks and challenges.

General Zhang added that the First Ministerial Meeting of China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial "2+2" dialogue mechanism was successfully held yesterday. It will play an important role in deepening strategic mutual trust between the two militaries and promoting pragmatic cooperation. China is willing to work with Indonesia to continuously explore potentials for cooperation, stimulate cooperation momentum, promote the upgrading of military cooperation, and jointly maintain regional security and stability.

Sjafrie said that the relationship between Indonesia and China has gone beyond the bilateral scope and is of strategic significance. The Indonesian side holds a positive attitude towards promoting mil-to-mil cooperation and is willing to work together with the Chinese side to implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, further deepen strategic mutual trust, and continuously improve the practical cooperation of the two militaries.

Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun said that the two sides established the "2+2" dialogue mechanism under the concern of the heads of state of the two countries, which reflects the high level and strategic nature of bilateral relationship. Currently, the mil-to-mil relationship goes well and embraces new opportunities. Both sides should seize the opportunity to upgrade cooperation, deepen cooperation innovation, strive for greater breakthroughs by concentrating on key areas, create a number of forward-looking, exemplary and leading cooperation projects and brands, so as to create a favorable environment for common development of the two countries and regional countries.

Sjafrie said that the "2+2" dialogue mechanism has achieved fruitful results and attracted worldwide attention. Indonesia opposes unilateralism and is willing to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with China, further enhance mil-to-mil relations, continuously improve the level of cooperation in defense security field, and enhance the resilience of both sides to jointly respond to risks and challenges.

Prior to the talks, Admiral Dong Jun held a welcome ceremony for Sjafrie and accompanied him to review the Guard of Honor of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
