The “Peace Ark” hospital ship of the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which had wrapped up the “Harmonious Mission 2011,” a medical service task tour lasting 105 days and coving a total of over 24,600 nautical miles, arrived at a military port in Zhoushan City of east China's Zhejiang Province on the morning of December 29, 2011. 416 officers and men on board came back with great honor. Wang Zhaohai, deputy political commissar of the PLA Navy, came to the pier to meet them on behalf of Wu Shengli, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and commander of the PLA Navy, and Liu Xiaojiang, political commissar of the PLA Navy.

The “Peace Ark” hospital ship set sail from Zhoushan City on September 16, 2011 to visit such four Latin American countries as Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica and carry out medical service task.

During the tour, the hospital ship adopted such methods as full-course outpatient reception and treatment on board, fixed-point service by medical elements and medical treatment on clinic tours to comprehensively carry out various humanitarian medical services including medical examination, out-patient treatment and medical exchange and cooperation.

According to statistics, the hospital ship has successively carried out medical examinations for 606 military officers and government officials, local people, overseas Chinese, staff of the Chinese embassies and the China-funded institutions of the four countries, out-patient treatments for 10,840 persons/times, auxiliary examinations for 6,353 persons/times, 118 successful surgeries and hospitalized treatments for 96 persons.

The “Harmonious Mission 2011” task tour marks the first visit of the naval vessel of the PLA Navy to the Caribbean area and the four Latin American countries, and also the beginning of the military diplomacy activity of the Chinese military to Costa Rica.

Qiu Yanpeng, commanding officer of the “Harmonious Mission 2011” medical service task, said that the visit and medical service promoted the friendly and cooperative relations between China and the four Latin American countries, conveyed the sincere friendship of the Chinese people and the Chinese military, broadened the new field of the military cooperation and exchanges between China and Latin America, presented the open and confident naval image of a great country, and further improved the high-sea medical service support capability of the hospital ship.
