BEIJING, Aug 8 (ChinaMil) -- Individual race of the "Tank Biathlon" competition of the International Army Games 2016 came to the last phase on the morning of August 7, local time.

The Chinese tank numbered 109 was the last to start in the Group 14, but it surpassed tanks from Zimbabwe and Iran and won the first place of the group.

The eight-day individual race of the "Tank Biathlon" competition, which involved a total of 54 teams from 17 countries, ended with the debut of the last group consisting of tanks from Venezuela, India and Russia on August 7, 2016.

According to results of the draw, the three Chinese teams are in Group 11,12 and 14. Their opponents are Mongolia and the Voluntary Association for Assistance to Army, Air Force and Navy in Group 11, Iran, Zimbabwe and Russia in Group 12 and Zimbabwe and Iran in Group 14.

Chinese teams use ZTZ-96B tanks while other countries use Russian-made T-72 tanks. Some critics said the competition is a performance battle between Chinese Type 96 tanks and Russian T-72 tanks as well as a direct competition of the training level of armored forces from all participating countries.

Three tank teams from China all secured group champions and they ranked No.1, No.2 and No.9 respectively among all teams. Thus, the Chinese delegation successfully reached the semi-finals with the highest total score.

Teams from 12 countries will compete in the semi-finals. During the race, three teams from each country will use the same tank for the relay race and the first four countries will enter the finals.

The "Tank Biathlon" refers to tank off-road maneuver and precise shooting. Tanks should run three laps on the competition ground filled with fords, minefields, side-hills, track bridges and other obstacles, and will have to complete gun firing, AA MG firing and coaxial MG firing. According to the competition rules, ranking will be decided based on the total completion time (including penalty time).
