BEIJING, October 9 (ChinaMil) -- The 7th Xiangshan Forum, co-hosted by the Chinese Association for Military Science and the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, will be held in Xiangshan Yihe Hotel in Beijing from October 10 to 12, 2016, according to a press briefing of the Xiangshan Forum on October 8.
As a high-level platform for dialogues on Asian security and defense issues with international influence, Xiangshan Forum attracts global attentions, He Lei, Secretary-General of the Secretariat of Xiangshan Forum and vice commandant of the Academy of Military Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), said in an interview.
More than 400 representatives, including 350 foreign representatives from 64 countries and international organizations, will participate in the forum to discuss security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, He Lei said.
The theme of this year's forum is to "Build a New Type of International Relations through Security Dialogue and Cooperation". The four topics for discussion at the plenary sessions are "Role of Militaries in Global Governance", "Responding to New Security Challenges in the Asia-Pacific through Cooperation", "Maritime Security Cooperation" and "International Terrorist Threats and Countermeasures".
The subjects for discussion at the four concurrent panels include "Major Power Relations and Global Strategic Structure", "Globalization vs. Deglobalization: Implications for International Security", "Latest Developments in Terrorism and Creative Approaches to Cooperation", "Maritime Crisis Management and Regional Stability".
This year, the Xiangshan Forum has three distinctive characters. First, the forum has a wider range of participants. In addition to the active participation of Asian countries, there are more countries from Europe, Africa and South Pacific attending the forum. At present, 58 countries and six international organizations have confirmed to send official delegations to Beijing.
Second, the issues are closer to real life. The theme, topics and subjects for discussion are both current and long-term, highlighting Asia-Pacific security and global security at the same time. Moreover, these topics cover hot topics for the sake of seeking consensus rather than quarreling. The theme set is generally recognized and responded positively by participants of the forum.
Third, there are more diverse activities. A TV debate and young experts seminar are arranged. The theme of the TV debate is "Asia-Pacific Future Security: Cooperation or Confrontation" and the theme of the seminar is "Building an Asia-Pacific Community of Common Destiny - A Perspective of Young Experts".
The young experts seminar aims to give full play to the wisdom of young people from all countries participating in the forum to offer advice and suggestions for maintaining peace and stability through a wider range of exchanges and dialogues.
In addition, more and more foreign government delegations and organizations have asked the Chinese side to arrange meetings with them and arrange meetings between foreign delegations. The bilateral and multilateral activities during the forum will be very intensive and active.
The Xiangshan Forum is a platform established in 2006. The first four forums were positioned as a track-2 communication platform between international defense think tank and academics and were held every two years.
In order to meet the new demands of changes of the security environment in Asia Pacific and needs for security cooperation, the biennial forum has been upgraded to a track-1.5 high level dialogue platform and held once a year since the 5th Xiangshan Forum in 2014.
Participants of the forum expanded from Chinese and foreign experts and scholars to official delegations of related countries.
Through upholding the concept of "Openness, Inclusiveness, Mutual Learning and Cooperation", participants of the forum will publicize policies, exchange views, resolve doubts and disagreements on global and Asia-Pacific security and defense issues.
The forum will help build a public platform for the international community and provide public products in an effort to create favorable conditions for global national defense officials, experts and scholars to seek consensus, and offer advice and suggestions for the maintenance of world and regional peace and stability.
