ZHANJIANG, May 9 (ChinaMil) -- The guided-missile frigate Huangshan (Hull 570), carrying a ship-borne helicopter, attached to a destroyer flotilla with the South China Sea Fleet of the PLA Navy, set sail to Singapore from a military port in Zhanjiang City, south China's Guangdong Province, on the afternoon of May 8, 2017.
The frigate Huangshan is heading for Singapore to participate in three activities, namely, the multilateral maritime joint drill of the Sixth Western Pacific Naval Symposium, the international fleet review of the Singapore Navy's 50th anniversary celebrations, and the International Maritime Defense Exhibition & Conference (IMDEX) 2017.
The frigate will participate in Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea (CUES) Q&A, light communication exercise, maritime formation movement and other training exercises of the multilateral maritime joint drill, according to Peng Guliang, commander of the guided-missile frigate Huangshan and deputy chief of staff of the destroyer flotilla.
The frigate will also conduct extensive military and cultural exchanges with other navies and further deepen mutual understanding and pragmatic cooperation among naval forces in member states of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium, Peng Guliang added.
The Western Pacific Naval Symposiu (WPNS) was established in 1987 to promote pragmatic cooperation, strengthen understanding and mutual trust among naval forces in member countries and jointly safeguard regional maritime security. Currently, the WPNS has 21 member states and 4 observers. China is one of the founding members of the WPNS.
In 2014, the Chinese Navy hosted the 14th annual session of the WPNS in Qingdao for the first time. At the session, all member states unanimously adopted the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea(CUES).
The frigate Huangshan, a new-type guided-missile frigate independently developed and made by China, joined the PLA Navy in May, 2008. Its full load displacement is more than 4,000 tons. It has strong sea-to-sea, sea-to-air and anti-submarine combat capabilities.
The frigate has once implemented the Chinese naval escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and waters off the Somali coast, and has also participated in the escort mission of Syria's chemical weapons with warships from Russia, Denmark, Norway and other countries.
