China, US hold defense ministry-level dialogue on Asia-Pacific security

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (ChinaMil) -- The 2nd Asia-Pacific security dialogue between the defense departments of China and the United States kicked off in Beijing on Dec. 13.

Director Hu Changming of the International Military Cooperation Office under China's Central Military Commission and the U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense David Helvey jointly presided over the dialogue.

The two sides exchanged views on the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and military-to-military cooperation between the two countries.

Shao Yuanming, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission (CMC), met with David Helvey in the building of the International Military Cooperation Office on Wednesday afternoon.

Shao said that under the guidance of the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the U.S. President Donald Trump, the current relations between the two countries and the two militaries have kept healthy and stable momentum of development.

The Chinese military is willing to work with the U.S. military to conscientiously implement the consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, and through the China-US Asia-Pacific security dialogue between the defense departments of the two countries and other dialogue and exchange mechanisms, to enhance mutual trust, make proper control of divergences, expand bilateral military cooperation and push forward relations between the two militaries at a new starting point, he added.

Helvey said that the U.S. side is willing to work with the Chinese side to jointly expand areas of cooperation and promote the relations between the two armed forces to make greater progress in accordance with the consensuses reached by the heads of state of the two countries.
