China, Singapore hold 6th defense policy dialogue

SINGAPORE, Dec. 13 (ChinaMil) -- The 6th defense policy dialogue between the defense ministries of China and Singapore kicked off here Monday. Jiang Guoping, assistant to the chief of the Joint Staff Department under the Central Military Commission (CMC), and Chan Yeng Kit, Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Ministry of Defense, jointly presided over the dialogue.


Jiang said that as a result of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Singapore, China and Singapore established in 2015 a partnership of all-round cooperation keeping with the times, and the two countries have made new progress in mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.


The military-to-military relations between the two countries have also developed smoothly in recent years, Jiang said, adding that the Chinese military is willing to further strengthen cooperation with the Singaporean military in fields of anti-terrorism, joint maritime drills and personnel training.


China supports Singapore to take up the rotating presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2018, and looks forward to working with Singapore to jointly push forward the military-to-military relations between the two countries and the China-ASEAN defense relations to a new high, said Jiang.


Chan Yeng Kit said that Singapore and China have kept good relations for a long time, Singapore welcomes and supports China to achieve greater development and play bigger role in regional affairs.


The Singaporean military looks forward to conducting more high-level contacts, exchanges of military services, joint training exercises, as well as pragmatic cooperation with the Chinese military to continuously promote the level of defense cooperation between the two countries, Chan said.
