KHARTOUM, May 23 (ChinaMil) -- Joint Special Representative of the UN‑African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Jeremiah Mamabolo and the UNAMID Force Commander Lieutenant General Leonard Ngondi recently led a group of 23 heads of UNAMID's sub-departments to inspect the Mission's temporary operational base in Golo, where the Chinese peacekeeping engineers had just finished infrastructure construction. They inspected the security deployment, defense facilities and the communication station at the base.

Golo, located in the hinterland of the Marra Mountains, has the most complicated situations and harshest natural conditions in UNAMID 's peacekeeping mission areas. The government troops and various opposition armed forces all have a presence here, creating an extremely dangerous security environment.

In early March, eighty-three peacekeepers sent by the Chinese peacekeeping engineering detachment advanced to Golo, where the Blue Helmets had never been deployed. Two months later, they completed a neatly arranged and well-equipped peacekeeping base with complete functions in the desolate Marra Mountains.

At the base, Mamabolo and Ngondi inspected the newly finished helicopter parking apron, shelters, gas station, communication base station and dorms.

Chen Liang, chief of staff of the Chinese peacekeeping engineering detachment, reported to the delegation the latest progress, completion dates and quality management of construction projects, and committed the Chinese peacekeeping force to making greater contributions to Darfur's peace and development.

"Thank you for your hard work. Your working standards and dedication created this miracle. You are the example for UNAMID," said Mamabolo, expressing his admiration and appreciation for the Chinese engineers who completed building the temporary operational base with such high efficiency and quality.

Ngondi spoke highly of the Chinese peacekeeping engineers' professional level and expected more model construction projects like the Golo temporary operational base will appear in UNAMID mission areas.
