BEIRUT, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Stefano Del Col expressed on Sunday serious concern after Hezbollah's attack on an Israeli military vehicle in Avivim in northern Israel.

"This is a serious incident in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and clearly aimed at undermining stability in the area," Del Col was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the UNIFIL.

Del Col urged the parties to exercise the utmost restraint to prevent any further escalation of the situation.

Hezbollah destroyed on Sunday an Israeli military vehicle in Avivim, prompting Israel to open fire in Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah's attack came in retaliation to an attack waged by two Israeli drones last Sunday in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Del Col said that calm has been generally restored in the area and the parties have reassured the UNIFIL of their continued commitment to the cessation of hostilities in accordance with resolution 1701.
