KABUL, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Afghan national security forces discovered and defused 13 roadside bombs and landmines in four provinces within day, the Afghan Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

"Engineering teams of Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) discovered and neutralized 13 roadside bombs after several hours of efforts and point-to-point search operations in Helmand, Khost, Paktika and Farah provinces within the last 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement.

Taliban militants have been using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to make roadside bombs and landmines for targeting security forces, but the lethal home-made weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

"Discoveries like this demonstrate the ever-increasing capability of ANDSF to protect the civilians from indiscriminate IED attacks," the statement said.

On Sept. 1, a total of 16 Afghan civilians were dead in two separate IED explosions in Farah and Balkh provinces.
