Q: State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi just announced in his statement at the UNGA general debate that China has initiated the domestic legal procedures to join the Arms Trade Treaty. Could you share with us China's considerations for joining the Treaty and if there is a timetable?

A: As State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced, China has initiated the domestic legal procedures to join the Arms Trade Treaty. China is currently going through the relevant domestic legal procedures as required and striving for its accession to the ATT at an early date.

This is a significant step in China's active participation in global arms trade governance to safeguard international and regional peace and stability. It demonstrates China's resolution to support multilateralism and forge a community with a shared future for mankind.

China attaches great importance to issues caused by illicit trafficking and abuse of conventional arms. We are in favor of the purpose and objective of the ATT, and support the international community in taking all necessary measures to regulate international arms trade and combat illicit transfer of conventional arms.

As a responsible member of the international community, China stands ready to strengthen exchange and cooperation with all parties to establish a well-regulated and sound order for arms trade and contribute to safeguarding international and regional peace and stability.
