PORT MORESBY, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, July 18 (ChinaMil) -- The medical staff of the Chinese naval hospital ship Peace Ark, who is currently on the Mission Harmony 2018, successfully held joint emergency rescue drills with the military and civilian counterparts of Papua New Guinea (PNG), in the Oceanian country’s capital Port Moresby on Tuesday morning, local time.

The drills included medical treatment and transfer of the wounded and sick at sea, medical support for the military personnel deployed and civilians living on an island, international humanitarian medical aid, as well as disaster relief rescue and foreign military exchanges and cooperation.

Approximately 100 people participated in the drills, and nearly 40 people from seven Papua New Guinea government departments and agencies including the health and defense sectors observed the drills.

“We can benefit a lot from participation and exchange,” said a doctor from a local hospital. He praised the emergency response capabilities of the Chinese hospital ship’s staff and expressed the hope that the medical exchange and cooperation can be continuously deepened between the two countries and their militaries.

Luo Dapeng, the World Health Organization representative in Papua New Guinea, also commended that the drills will benefit Papua New Guinea and enhance its emergency medical rescue capabilities.

PNG Health Secretary Pascoe Kase said that the drills were conducted closely to real-life situations and it was a rare opportunity for the PNG medical staff to participate in such drills.

China’s experience in emergency rescue for public health emergencies has provided a valuable demonstration to PNG's government, especially the health sector, Pascoe Kase said.

Kase added that this is the second time Peace Ark visits Papua New Guinea. The Chinese naval hospital ship’s visit has also expanded the new exchange programs on top of PNG's medical services.

The joint emergency drills are necessary and meaningful, and the PNG side looks forward to Peace Ark’s future visits, he said.

Following the joint drills, the ship’s medical specialists also gave presentations on the organization and implementation of large-scale emergency medical rescues for urban public health incidents as well as the vessel’s mass casualty rescue and treatment nursing capabilities. They also carried out training on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and aseptic technique, etc.
