BEIJING, Nov. 28 (ChinaMil) -- H.E. Ambassador Wu Haitao, Deputy Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the United Nations (UN), called on Russia and Ukraine to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation of tensions, and to properly address relevant issues through dialogue and consultation on November 26, 2018.

The ambassador said at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the Ukrainian issue held on Monday that China has noticed the altercation between Russian and Ukrainian naval ships in waters near the Kerch Strait, adding that China is concerned with the tension arising thereof.

The ambassador also said that China has consistently adhered to an objective and just position on the Ukrainian crisis, namely respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries including Ukraine, and opposing any external forces interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs. Chinese side always believes that military solution will get nowhere, and dialogue and negotiation are the only way to end the crisis. The international community must adhere to the diplomatic efforts to promote a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis. The discussions in the UN Security Council should help to effectively alleviate tensions in relevant regions and play a constructive role in achieving a political solution.

The Chinese ambassador emphasized that all the relevant parties should earnestly implement the new Minsk Agreement, adhere to the general direction of political settlement, seek a comprehensive solution to the Ukrainian crisis through dialogue and consultation, promote Ukraine’s peace, stability and development, and push forward the harmonious coexistence of all nationalities living in Ukrainian, and the peaceful coexistence of Ukraine and countries in the region. China will continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
