Democratic Progressive Party authorities are squandering Taiwan people's money in the pursuit of "independence through military means", a move that will only push Taiwan into an abyss, a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman said on Friday.

According to media reports, the construction of Taiwan's first "indigenous submarine", Haikun, has encountered setbacks and may not be completed on schedule.

Jiang Bin, the spokesman, said that the DPP authorities have disregarded the safety and well-being of the people in Taiwan by wasting their hard-earned money on attempts to achieve "independence through military means".

"Persisting on this dangerous path that harms and ruins Taiwan will only drag the island into a disastrous abyss," Jiang said.

He added that the so-called "indigenous submarine", which the "Taiwan independence" forces have spent an enormous amount of money to assemble and patch together, is no match for the People's Liberation Army.

He described it as a "reckless overestimation" of their own capabilities that will ultimately lead to their own destruction.
