BEIJING, Oct. 20 -- The 54th CISM World Naval Pentathlon Championship opened on the afternoon of October 19 at the Mulan Lake Campus of the Chinese PLA Naval University of Engineering in Wuhan City, central China's Hubei Province.

The five-day event brought together more than 100 athletes from nine countries, including China, South Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Spain, Iran, Italy, Pakistan, and Russia, who would compete in the championship. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Myanmar sent observers to the event.

During the four-day competition, Chinese and international teams will compete in six events: obstacle course, life-saving swimming, utility swimming, seamanship, amphibious cross-country race,  and obstacle relay.

The World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship, originated in 1949, is a flagship event of the CISM. The current competition standards are designed to simulate naval operational scenarios, such as amphibious landings, and maritime rescue operations, to test the fundamental professional skills of participants from different countries.
