The 48th Chinese naval escort taskforce set sail from a military port in Qingdao City in east China's Shandong Province on October 11, heading for the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia to take over the escort mission from the 47th escort taskforce.

The 48th Chinese naval escort taskforce is composed of the guided-missile destroyer Tangshan, the guided-missile frigate Daqing and the comprehensive supply ship Taihu, with two helicopters and dozens of special operations soldiers on board.
