In April 1990, China dispatched five military observers to the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), marking the beginning of the Chinese military's participation in UN peacekeeping operations (UNPKOs). Over the past 36 years, the Chinese Blue Helmets have continuously participated in 26 peacekeeping missions. More than 50,000 Chinese peacekeepers have been dispatched in total. Their mission areas covered more than 20 countries and regions including Lebanon and South Sudan.
Currently, over 1,600 Chinese peacekeepers are serving in different UN peacekeeping mission areas and at the UN headquarters. Their duties include mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), medical assistance, engineering support, and armed patrols. Thanks to their dedication and professionalism, the Chinese Blue Helmets have become an indispensable and reliable force in the UN peacekeeping operations.
