The peaceful reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will create great opportunities for Taiwan's economic and social development and bring tangible benefits to Taiwan compatriots, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Upon reunification, Taiwan could tap into the mainland's vast market and economies of scale while leveraging its strengths in science, technology and talent to inject new vitality into its own economy, said a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

The spokesperson made the remarks at a press conference in response to a question on how peaceful reunification would bring the greatest benefits to compatriots on both sides of the strait and to the Chinese nation.

He said that after cross-strait connectivity is achieved, Taiwan will enjoy a stronger guarantee of energy resources. Its infrastructure will be improved and its safety and development interests will be fully ensured.

"The sharing of public services across the strait will make the lives of people in Taiwan more convenient. Meanwhile, Taiwan compatriots will feel a stronger sense of confidence and dignity in the international community," he added.
