MOSCOW, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday to discuss expanding political dialogue and collaboration in trade, economy and humanitarian affairs.
"Both sides noted the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on Aug. 9 on the reorganization of the Khmeimim Airbase and the Tartus logistics support point," said the Kremlin.
The memorandum confirms that civilian facilities will be transferred under Damascus's control, while Russian military bases will be transformed into joint training centers. The relevant restructuring work will be completed within three months.
Putin reaffirmed Russia's support for Syria's unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty, and for creating conditions for long-term normalization and post-conflict reconstruction.
