China's foreign ministry condemned Tuesday the new Pentagon report unfounded which warns of Chinese and Russian space threats to the U.S. national security.

The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) said in an assessment on Monday that China and Russia were enhancing counter-space capabilities that would challenge the U.S. military's dominance in that domain. The report also accused China and Russia of pushing proposals that limit the militarization of space but leave room for both countries to build counter-space weaponry.

Space is the common property of all mankind, not the private property of the Americans, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing.

China advocates peaceful use of space and opposes weaponization and arms races, Hua stressed. On the other hand, the U.S. has defined space as a combat territory, announced the formation of independent space force, and continuously carried out space combat exercises. Despite all this, the U.S. continues to publicize the threat from other countries.

If the U.S. really cares about the security of space, it should join China in arms control, Hua said.
