BEIJING, Feb. 17 -- Recently, the 20th Chinese peacekeeping multi-role engineering unit to Lebanon cleared out an emergency passage in the minefield on the Lebanon-Israel border to eliminate minefield risks for local residents.
Some cattle raised by local villagers accidentally entered the minefield on the Lebanon-Israel border recently, in order to eliminate mine risks during the rescue, the 20th Chinese peacekeeping multi-role engineering unit to Lebanon urgently cleared out an emergency minefield passage at the order of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Upon arriving at the minefield, the Chinese peacekeepers quickly demarcated the operation area and made preparations for mine clearance. To ensure safety, they used mine detectors to make the way first.
During the operation, Chinese peacekeepers found that one cattle had been killed by mines and the other one was injured. They removed the mines after anesthetizing the injured cattle.
After nearly seven hours of continuous operation, the Chinese peacekeepers cleared 12 mines and successfully created a 35-meter-long safe passage spanning four mine belts and rescued the injured cattle.
Since their deployment to the mission area, the Chinese peacekeepers to Lebanon, who are dubbed as 'most lovely oriental friends' by the Lebanon people, have achieved zero casualties in mine clearance for 16 consecutive years, setting a record of the fastest speed, the highest quality, and the lowest cost and casualty rate among UN mine clearance troops.
