HONG KONG, May 10 -- The unveiling ceremony of a monument in memory of the group of anti-Japanese war heroes led by Liu Chunxiang was held at Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, on May 9. This is the third large-scale memorial facility on the history the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Hong Kong.

Established in February 1942, the Hong Kong Independent Battalion of the Dongjiang Column, an anti-Japanese aggression guerrilla force under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), had staged resistance efforts against the Japanese army, and rescued quite a number of cultural elites and members of the Allied troops who had been captured, making significant contribution to the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. In May 1943, seven members, including Liu Chunxiang, commander of the Lantau Squadron under the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Battalion, sacrificed their lives in battles against Japanese aggressors.

On September 3, 2020, China’s Ministry of Veterans Affairs (MVA) announced the third batch of 185 famous anti-Japanese martyrs and heroes, including Liu Chunxiang and his team members.

In April 2023, on the eve of the 80th anniversary in memory of the fallen Liu Chunxiang and his hero group, the monument was completed with the joint efforts of patriotic organizations and figures from all walks of life in Hong Kong.

The Secretary for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Mai Meijuan, stated that the patriotic sentiments of the anti-Japanese martyrs should be passed down from generation to generation. The establishment of the monument at Lung Kwu Chau is not only to commemorate the anti-Japanese martyrs such as Liu Chunxiang, but also to make our offspring remember history and inherit the national spirit.
