BEIJING, April 3 -- The 13th Chinese Peacekeeping Level-2 Hospital to United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) completed a comprehensive exercise for treatment of mass casualties organized by the UNMISS on March 31.

This exercise was led and coordinated by the UN joint operations centre at the Wau Base, with an aim to test the capability of the UN peacekeeping troops responding to mass casualties. The exercise was conducted in the order of initial response, classification of injuries, transportation of wounded, specialized treatment, and medical evacuation. The Chinese medical contingent was assigned to conduct command of the rescue site and three peacekeeping Level-1 hospitals.

During the exercise, in view of the injuries such as cranial and cerebral trauma, cardiac and respiratory arrest, fatal bleeding, chest and abdominal trauma, and limb fractures, the Chinese medics commanded and coordinated the on-site peacekeepers to conduct a rapid battlefield wound examination using the methods designated by the United Nations, and carried out corresponding medical treatment respectively. The Chinese team's professional treatment performance and joint commanding and coordinating ability were fully acknowledged by the medical officer of the UNMISS at the Wau base.
