BEIRUT, July 5 -- A medal-awarding ceremony for the 21st Chinese Peacekeeping Troops to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was held in the Chinese camp in Hanniyah village, southern Lebanon, on July 4. All 410 peacekeepers of the contingent were awarded the UN Peace Medal of Honor.

More than 300 guests, including Major General Aroldo Lazaro Saenz, the UNIFIL commander, and Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Qian Minjian, were invited to attend the ceremony.

Major General Aroldo Lazaro Saenz presented the UN Peace Medal of Honor to the Chinese peacekeepers in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the peace and stability in the southern Lebanon region over the past year. "I believe that all of you will continue fighting for the cause of peace with firm belief and selflessness," he said.

Since its deployment to the mission area in August 2022, the Chinese peacekeeping contingent to Lebanon has cleared 8,400 square meters of minefields, safely removed over 1,400 landmines, completed more than 100 construction tasks with high standards, and provided medical treatment to more than 3,000 UN personnel and local people. Besides their duties, Chinese peacekeepers also carried out more than 20 cultural exchange activities with local people and enhanced friendship, which has received widespread acclaim.
