KINSHASA, July 20 -- The 26th Chinese Peacekeeping Engineering Company to the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) completed the Luzira Bridge rescue work in Kalehe, Sud-Kivu Province in the east of the country, on July 18, which was praised by the MONUSCO.
Recently, heavy rainfall and deadly floods in Kalehe toppled the Luzira Bridge, cutting off the key transport supply lines in the region and seriously affecting the local public traffic. Upon receiving the commission, the Chinese peacekeeping engineering contingent immediately marched to the disaster-hit area.
After continuous hard work, the Chinese peacekeepers completed the reconstruction mission with high standards and high quality ahead of schedule. After trial-use, the traffic condition of the repaired bridge has been proved.
Bintou Keita, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC and Head of the MONUSCO spoke highly of the professional capability shown by the Chinese contingent at the completion ribbon-cutting ceremony held on July 18, saying that these efforts provided strong support for the overall disaster relief work.
Force Commander of the MONUSCO Lieutenant General Otávio Rodrigues de Miranda Filho congratulated the Chinese contingent on its early and excellent fulfillment of the bridge construction mission.
Local officials also expressed their gratitude to the Chinese peacekeepers.
