WAU, South Sudan, June 19 -- The 15th Chinese Peacekeeping Horizontal Engineering Company to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) taught local people vegetable planting tips on June 14, 2025, to help improve their livelihood and facilitate local agricultural development.

Despite its vast land, South Sudan has been plagued by a lack of planting techniques and experience, leaving a large area of arable land uncultivated. The critical shortage of vegetables seriously affects the daily lives of local people. To address the matter, the peacekeepers of Chinese peacekeeping engineering contingent taught the local people Chinese planting techniques to help them alleviate the scarcity of vegetables and crops.

On June 14, the Chinese peacekeepers invited residents from surrounding villages to the garden of their camp where they demonstrated the entire process of vegetable planting, introduced appropriate vegetables suitable to local climate and soil conditions and elaborated on the key points of planting.

"As an old Chinese saying goes, 'to give people fish and you only provide them with one meal; to teach them to fish and they can benefit throughout their lives'. We used to provide material supply to local people, and now we are shifting to this new model of sharing production techniques," said Huang Tao, a Chinese peacekeeper to South Sudan. By teaching them planting techniques, we not only can help local people in South Sudan improve their agricultural productivity, but also promote the friendship and trust between the two peoples, as well as inject new impetus to the peace and development of South Sudan.

A local resident named Simon said: "Chinese peacekeepers are exceptionally capable, and they know a lot of things. By exchanging vegetable planting techniques with them, we have learned a lot of relevant knowledge and they also solved many problems for us. Many thanks to the Chinese peacekeepers."
