An illegal weather station sensor installed by an overseas enterprise
BEIJING, Oct. 31 -- According to Chinese Ministry of State Security, the national security authorities, in collaboration with the meteorological administrations, have carried out nationwide special inspections on foreign-related meteorological detection sites since the beginning of this year. They have investigated more than ten overseas meteorological equipment agents, and inspected over 3,000 foreign-related meteorological detection sites, among which hundreds of sites had been found transmitting meteorological data to overseas in real time. These sites were widely distributed in more than 20 provinces across the country, posing critical potential risks to national security.
Among them, some projects were directly funded by foreign governments. Some observation sites were set up around sensitive places, such as military units and military-industrial enterprises, and used to conduct altitude verification and GPS positioning. Some were placed in major grain-producing areas to analyze the relevancy between crop growth and grain yield. And, some even performed long-time, high-frequency and multi-point real-time data transmission to foreign official meteorological agencies, serving foreign countries' homeland security on the purpose of monitoring China's meteorological data.
Such activities never applied for administrative licenses for foreign-related meteorological observation from competent authorities, never submitted meteorological data to the authorities, and never obtained approval for transmission of meteorological data overseas, which meant that they had violated relevant administrative and security regulations. China’s national security authorities, in collaboration with meteorological and confidentiality departments, investigated and treated such illegal activities according to relevant laws and regulations, and terminated the illegal activities of meteorological data outflow.
