BEIJING, Jan. 8 -- According to the official Wechat account of China's Ministry of State Security, China's national security authority recently uncovered a case involving the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, often known as MI6, which used third country personnel to carry out espionage activities against China.
A foreign national surnamed Huang served as the head of an overseas consulting agency. The MI6 established a so-called intelligence partnership with Huang in 2015. Since then, MI6 has directed Huang to enter China many times, guiding him to use his public identity as a cover to spy and collect intelligence related to China for the UK, and search for target persons suitable for MI6 to subvert. MI6 also provided professional intelligence training to Huang in various locations, including the UK, and equipped him with specialized spy equipment for intelligence exchange and communication.
After obtaining the evidence of Huang's espionage activities, China's national security agencies took criminal coercive measures against him in accordance with the law. Investigation showed that Huang had provided the UK with nine copies of classified documents, five of confidential documents, and another three of intelligence materials in total.
During the investigation, the national security authority made timely notifications and arranged consular visits to ensure Huang's lawful rights in accordance with the law.
