BEIJING, May 17 -- The director of the Office for International Military Cooperation under China's Central Military Commission held video talks with the US Assistant Secretary of Defense upon invitation on the evening of May 16, 2024.
The Chinese side pointed out that under the strategic guidance of two heads of state, the Chinese and US militaries have enhanced communication and exchanges, injecting positive factors into the mil-to-mil relations. This hard-won situation should be valued by both sides. The two militaries should adhere to mutual-respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, which is the correct approach to get along with each other.
The Chinese side also stressed that the military collusion between the US and China's Taiwan region and the behaviors by the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces are the main sources against the stability across the Taiwan Strait. Chinese military's determination and resolution to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unshakable. The US interferes in South China Sea by inciting its "proxy" to make troubles and provoke disputes in the region, and it is perfectly legitimate for China to take actions to protect its own rights and interests. In addition, the US's deployment of land-based medium-range missiles will seriously damage regional security. China will take resolute countermeasures in response if the US is bent on having its own way.
The two sides also exchanged views onother issues.
