Chinese peacekeeping rapid response unit to Abyei begins first rotation

ZHENGZHOU, May 7 -- Recently,the Chinese peacekeeping rapid response unit deployed to Abyei has begun its first task rotation. On May 6, the first batch of 75 troops assigned to the second rapid response unitdeparted from Zhengzhou City, central China's Henan Province, and flied to Abyei to replace the 150 members of the first rapid unit for a year-long peacekeeping mission.

During its deployment in Abyei, the first Chinese peacekeeping rapid response unit completed over 300 operations, including armed escorts and patrols, setup of temporary checkpoints, and protection of key points. The unit received a commendation from theCommander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and all its members were awarded the United Nations Peace Medal.

The second Chinese peacekeeping rapid response unit to Abyei mainly consists of troops from a brigade under the Chinese PLA 81st Group Army. According to the plan, the second batch of its members will arrive at the mission area in mid-May.
