BEIJING, July 7 -- A Chinese representative made remarks on the Syrian issue at the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on July 5, saying that peace and stability are the greatest guarantee for human rights, and working for a political solution to the Syrian issue is the only way out. The Syria re-joined the League of Arab States (LAS) after 12 years of absence is full testimony that all countries in the region wish to stay away from bloc confrontation, mitigate tension, and jointly strive for peace and development.
The Chinese representative said China appreciates the unremitting efforts made by LAS and regional countries for Syria's return and has made its own contributions to it. Facts have proven that foreign interference, instigation of confrontation, and pressuring and sanction are no good for solving problems. The international community should follow the historical trend, play a constructive role, and support Syria in independently exploring a development path suitable for its own national conditions and deciding its own destiny.
Noting the prolonged crisis in Syria and the immense sufferings inflicted upon the Syrians during the war, the Chinese representative emphasized that when the UN Human Rights Council discusses the Syrian issue, it should never forget the culpability of the US and the UK for what the Syrians have been through. The Chinese side urged those countries to stop their illegal stationing and military activities in Syria and their unilateral sanctions against the country, so that the Syrians can truly enjoy human rights, wealth, freedom and dignity.
