BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Monday slammed recent remarks made by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te over the weekend, calling them a further escalation of provocations aimed at seeking "Taiwan independence" and seriously damaging cross-Strait relations.
In his speeches, Lai hyped up the so-called "mainland threat," repeated the narrative of "Taiwan independence," distorted legal basis and historical facts, and disregarded the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan, said Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office. Zhu made the remarks in response to a media query.
Lai's misinterpretation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, a political document that embodies the one-China principle, and his attempts to sever historical and legal ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait further expose his fear of, and resistance to, deeper exchanges between compatriots on both sides, Zhu noted.
"China's recovery of Taiwan from Japanese occupation is a fundamental component of the post-WWII international order, and a result of the shared efforts of compatriots across the Strait to safeguard national dignity," she said. "Those who act against the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation are doomed to fail, and attempts to challenge China's sovereignty and territorial integrity through 'Taiwan independence' will only lead to a dead end."
Reiterating that people on both sides of the Strait share the common desire for peace, development, exchanges and cooperation, Zhu said the mainland side is committed to advancing peaceful and integrated development across the Strait.
She called on compatriots in Taiwan to see through the hypocrisy and political manipulation of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities, and to work hand in hand with compatriots on the mainland to achieve national reunification and rejuvenation.
