BEIJING, July 15, 2023 – "Our goal is to keep improving and strengthening ourselves, to become more capable of defending national sovereignty, security and development interests", said Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, when responding to media questions on Friday.

It is reported that Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, claimed lately that China wants to be the Asia's hegemon within the next 10 years and achieve the goal of surpassing the US in military power by mid-century. And the US military must maintain decisive superiority and readiness.

In response to such self-serving and erroneous remarks, Senior Colonel Tan pointed out the fundamental reason for this is that the US is still stuck in its "zero-sum game" mindset and always turns a blind eye to the overwhelming global trend of peace and development.

"The so-called maintenance of its 'decisive superiority' is nothing more than an attempt to remain dominant and seek self-interests by perpetuating its hegemony," added Tan.

The spokesperson also made it clear that China will never follow the beaten track of big powers in seeking hegemony and explained the goal of Chinese military development.

"Our goal is to keep improving and strengthening ourselves, to become more capable of defending national sovereignty, security and development interests, and to make contributions to preserving regional and global peace and stability, and serving the building of a community with a shared future for mankind", said Tan.
