PYONGYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A major shipyard in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced its plan to build another advanced destroyer, state media said on Tuesday.
In a mobilization gathering held on Monday, the Nampho Shipyard pledged to build Choe Hyon-class Destroyer No. 3 by Oct. 10, 2026, a date marking the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
Yun Chi Gol, manager of the Nampho Shipyard, noted the shipmaker's success in building the country's first new-generation multi-mission destroyer. He called on shipyard workers to build the new warship within the designated timeframe, the KCNA report said, citing the official's address to the gathering.
The Nampho Shipyard unveiled the country's first Choe Hyon-class destroyer in a launching ceremony held in April this year, while the DPRK's second Choe Hyon-class destroyer overturned and submerged in waters due to a "serious accident" during a launching ceremony at the Chongjin Shipyard in May. The damaged destroyer was relaunched at the Rajin Shipyard the following month.
