China has urged the U.S. to abide by the agreed one-China policy and to carefully handle Taiwan-related issues after Washington sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday.

"China has closely observed the situation of U.S. warships passing through the Taiwan Strait, and has voiced its concerns to the U.S.," China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing on Friday.

The Taiwan issue is an important and sensitive part of China-U.S. relations, Hua said, urging Washington to uphold and respect the one-China policy and the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

"The Taiwan issue should be handled cautiously to avoid any harm to bilateral ties, and to maintain regional peace and stability," Hua said.

The spokesperson also used a metaphor to urge the U.S. to act cautiously on the Taiwan issue.

"A family has two courtyards, a large one and a small one. For convenience, others can pass by the passage which is in the middle of the two courtyards. But if passengers make provocative remarks or actions, even sometimes they endanger the family's safety and comfort, what will you think?"

U.S. media reported that the guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell and the USNS Walter S. Diehl "conducted a routine Taiwan Strait Transit" on Thursday. U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Tim Gorman claimed that the sail is "in accordance with international law."
