BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson Friday slammed Taiwan politician Yu Shyi-Kun for hyping up "Taiwan independence" and spreading a "political virus" amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said Yu's erroneous remarks advocating "Taiwan independence" have undermined cross-Strait relations and once again exposed the illusion of a tiny number of people on the island to bank on the epidemic to seek independence.
Instead of protecting the lives, safety and common interests of people across the Taiwan Strait, these people are spreading a "political virus," trying to provoke confrontation and impede on the reciprocal care and help between people across the strait, Ma said, adding that they have lost their basic conscience and their deeds are disgraceful.
Stressing that the so-called "Taiwan independence" will only bring disasters to people in the island, Ma said some Taiwan politicians who act against the trend of times and ignore the benefits and safety of Taiwan compatriots are doomed to face a fiasco.
