BEIJING, Dec. 16 -- “Peaceful reunification and one country, two systems” is the best way to achieve national reunification, and most in the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots, said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council on a regular press conference on December 16. When asked to comment on some experts’ expressions recently that the possibility of peaceful reunification between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan is declining and the mainland should resort to force to promote reunification and peace, Zhu Fenglian stressed that the Chinese mainland is ready to do its utmost with all sincerity to realize peaceful reunification across Taiwan Straits, even though the possibility is quite low.
Zhu pointed out, for a long time, the Chinese mainland has made unremitting efforts to resolve the Taiwan question and promote peaceful reunification. “Peaceful reunification and one country, two systems” is the best way to achieve national reunification, and most in the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation with the Taiwan compatriots included.
The basic principles entirely take the reality of Taiwan into account, sufficiently respect the objective differences between the two sides across the Taiwan Strait, and fully serve to safeguard Taiwan compatriots' interests and well-being. The adherence to peaceful reunification shows the righteousness of the nation and is full of the Chinese mainland’s deep feelings of cherishing the value of peace and the well-being of its compatriots, as well as being responsible for the nation and future generations.
At the same time, the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and their activities have openly challenged the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, seriously undermined the vital interests of compatriots on both sides of the strait, and seriously endangered the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Zhu said.
Zhu also emphasized that China will leave no space for separatist activities of “Taiwan independence” in any form, and always insists on making full preparations for both external interference and “Taiwan Independence” separatist activities. The purpose is to fundamentally safeguard the prospects for and thus advance the process of the peaceful reunification of the nation. If the “Taiwan independence” separatist force insists on going their own way or even take risks, China will take all necessary measures to resolutely smash its separatist plot and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
