UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution to tackle the illicit transfer and diversion of arms in violation of Security Council-mandated arms embargoes.

Under Resolution 2616, the Security Council will consider, during the renewal of mandates of peace operations that coincide where arms embargoes have been mandated by the council, whether and how the peace operations could support relevant national authorities in combating the illicit transfer and diversion of arms in violation of the arms embargoes.

The resolution also encourages UN peace operations and relevant UN entities to assist in reinforcing capacities of host nation authorities, at their request, in data collection and training in this regard.

It emphasizes that the capacity of states under Security Council-mandated embargoes to exert effective control over their existing arms and ammunition stockpiles and future imports will be duly considered by the council when evaluating the possible lifting of an arms embargo.

The resolution was adopted with 12 votes in favor. China, India and Russia abstained.
