UNITED NATIONS, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday extended until April 30, 2023 the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the committee which oversees its sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Unanimously adopting Resolution 2627 under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the council also underscores that the panel shall carry out credible, fact-based, independent assessments, analysis, and recommendations in an objective and impartial manner and in accordance with the mandate of the Panel of Experts, as specified in paragraph 26 of Resolution 1874 (2009).
The council urges all states, relevant United Nations bodies and other interested parties, to cooperate fully with the committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718 (2006) and the Panel of Experts, in particular by supplying any information at their disposal on the implementation of the measures imposed by several other resolutions.
Resolution 1718 imposed a series of economic sanctions on the DPRK and established the sanctions committee to gather more information, specify the sanctions, monitor them, and issue recommendations.
A Panel of Experts established in 2009 supports the work of the sanctions committee through expert analysis, particularly in evaluating cases of noncompliance. While the sanctions committee can make legally binding decisions on how to specifically execute the sanctions, the Panel of Experts only has an informational and advisory role in support of those decisions.
