Question: According to British media reports, Mr Tobias Ellwood, Chair of the Defence Sub-Committee of the House of Commons, recently told reporters that he had discussed Taiwan’s indigenous submarine programme during his recent trip to Taiwan, and that Britain should have greater military and security interaction with Taiwan and be braver in supporting Taiwan internationally. What’s your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: The wrongful words and deeds of the above-mentioned British politician seriously violate the one-China principle, grossly interfere in China’s internal affairs, and significantly undermine the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. We strongly condemn this.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and Taiwan affairs are purely China’s internal affairs. The Chinese people’s will to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering. The one-China principle is a red line, and it is also the political foundation and prerequisite for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the UK. We urge British politicians not to underestimate the high sensitivity of the Taiwan question, stop stirring up troubles and making provocations, stop undermining the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. Any troublemaker who dares to provoke the Chinese people is doomed to fail and will come to no good end.
