The Chinese mainland will take resolute measures if separatist forces cross the red line in Taiwan, Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Thursday.

Ma made the remarks after US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the US will "take every action" it can to prevent the reunification of the mainland with Taiwan by force, during a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday.

Taiwan is a part of China, and complete reunification of the country is the common aspiration of the Chinese nation, Ma said.

"We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity, but if separatist forces provoke us or even cross the red line for 'Taiwan independence', we will be compelled to take resolute measures," he said.

The fundamental reason for the tension across the Taiwan Straits is that the Democratic Progressive Party is attempting to rely on the US for independence, while some US politicians intend to use Taiwan to contain China, Ma said.

Some US politicians have been taking wrong actions on the Taiwan question, he said. "They are trying to use Taiwan as a pawn and obstruct the reunification of China and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."

Ma said the settlement of the Taiwan question is entirely China's own affair and brooks no outside interference.

He called on the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US Joint Communiques, and stop sending wrong signals to separatist forces.
